For families that include children that live with sensory-processing issues, it can be difficult to find entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. Certain sounds, smells, textures, or lighting can cause sensory overload, which makes many activities difficult to enjoy. We’ve compiled a few sensory-friendly activities in Indianapolis so that everyone can have fun!

CONNOR PRAIRIE:

On the second Sunday of every month, Connor Prairie holds sensory-friendly hours. Admission is free, and the sensory-friendly hours are from 10 AM – 12 PM.

“Enjoy a calm environment at Conner Prairie – and explore at your own pace. Anything that makes loud noises or has bright lights (i.e. the Dry Goods Store in Civil War Journey) will be shut off unless specifically asked to turn on. Access to the quiet space areas in our buildings and across the grounds will be highlighted for easy access.”

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

The Children’s Museum can be fun for both kids and adults! And they’re happy to make sure your visit is sensory-friendly before you even walk through the door. You can download an sensory-friendly map of the museum (or pick one up when you arrive). Maps can let you know what areas of the museum are “sensory-heavy” and which areas are less stimulating. That way, you can plan the perfect path for you and your family!

You can also download a Social Narrative, which includes photos and descriptions so you can learn more about some of the areas of the museum that your family might find the most enjoyable.

Additionally, you can download their Visual Checklist, to help plan a schedule for your visit.

FREEDOM TRAIL PARK

Located in Westfield, Freedom Trail Park features an all-inclusive playground and a sensory garden. The city of Westfield worked with Hamilton County Autism Support Group to make sure that the park included features that children with autism would find the most engaging, for example, spinning and twirl features.

MOVIE THEATRES

Who doesn’t love a good movie and some popcorn (extra butter, please)? Many movie theaters are offering sensory-friendly viewings of popular movies, so your family can enjoy the next big blockbuster hit in the environment that’s best for YOU.

LUCAS OIL STADIUM

Lucas Oil Stadium offers sensory-friendly bags for those with sensory-processing issues. Bags include noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and weighted lap pads. There are also designated quiet spaces within the stadium if a quieter and more secure environment is needed.

Fans who wish to utilize sensory bags can check them out from the Guest Services Kiosk located behind Section 121
